BuildX builds all of these; they are not different products: - **ADU / Accessory Dwelling Unit** - the legal and zoning term used in Massachusetts law and on permit paperwork. This is the formal name. - **In-law suite** / **mother-in-law apartment** - the same structure, named for its most common use. One genuine distinction: some in-law suites are a bedroom and bathroom added to the main house with no separate kitchen or entrance, which makes them an addition rather than an ADU. - **Granny flat** / **granny pod** - informal names for a detached ADU, usually built for an aging parent. - **Backyard cottage** / **casita** / **carriage house** / **guest house** - regional and informal names for a detached ADU. - **Basement apartment** / **garage conversion** - an ADU created by converting existing space rather than building new.
